It wasn't that something was wrong. It just hadn't clicked yet.
The Reading Ladders book starts every sentence with one word and adds one more each line. Your child climbs from "I" to a full sentence, then reads a short story all on their own.

"We tried flashcards. Worksheets. Practice. Nothing held his attention."
That's how a lot of parents describe it before they find ladders. Maybe some of this sounds familiar:
Often nothing is wrong. A whole sentence is just a lot to hold at once when every word still takes effort. Make the steps smaller, and the same child can climb it.
Start with one word. Add one more.
Each page has three little ladders in colored boxes, and a fourth box that puts the three finished sentences together. Here's an example in the same style:
I see
I see my
I see my cat.
My cat
My cat is
My cat is soft.
She sits
She sits on
She sits on me.
My cat is soft.
She sits on me.
- Only one new word per line. Everything else on the line was just read, so your child only works on one small thing at a time.
- The same words, over and over. By the bottom of a ladder, the first words have been read four or five times. The National Reading Panel found that guided repeated reading improved children's word recognition, fluency and comprehension.
- Top to bottom, left to right. Pointing down each ladder builds the tracking habit beginning readers need.
- Then a story they read alone. The fourth box joins the three sentences into a short paragraph, and your child reads the whole thing. That's the moment the confidence shows.

Pages about their own day
Every page has a theme from a young child's world, so the sentences are about things they already know and care about:
Big, clear print in soft colored boxes. A sturdy horizontal spiral binding, so it lies flat or stands up while you read together.
Ladders build on letter sounds. They work best once your child knows most letter sounds and can blend simple words like c‑a‑t.

Questions
What age is it for?
Most children start around 4 to 6, once they know most letter sounds. Older children who find reading hard often enjoy it too, because each step is small. Choose by what your child can read, not their age.
How is this different from flashcards and worksheets?
Flashcards practice single words. Worksheets often jump straight to whole sentences. Ladders sit in between: one word, then the same words with one more, until your child reads a full sentence, then three sentences together as a story.
Will it help with dyslexia?
Many parents of struggling readers use ladders as gentle, structured practice, and the small steps can make reading time less stressful. But this is a practice book, not a test, diagnosis or treatment for any learning difference. If reading stays very hard, talk with your child's teacher or pediatrician.
